Doug Thompson

LSW, MSW, EMDR Trained

“These pains that you feel are messengers. Listen to them. Turn them to sweetness.”

-Rumi

Doug seeks to build genuine connections where people feel safe to be themselves and explore the parts of life that feel challenging - trauma, grief, strained relations, depression, mania, anxiety, and whatever else ails them. Putting down the shame and approaching these topics from a stance of curiosity and kindness often grants us access to a version of ourselves that is intuitively wise and healing.

Doug works with adults, adolescents and couples. His work with individuals usually begins with discovering together how their pains and dilemmas make complete sense, given everything they have faced. Then, they chart a path forward, towards greater peace and meaning. The journey often includes addressing the source of one’s pain, such as an old wound that needs healing or a present-day challenge that needs navigating.

Doug’s work with couples is defined by a belief that we never outgrow our need for secure attachment, and a less than secure connection with one’s partner is often the underlying source of relationship challenges. Doug helps couples to take a step back from their habitual and looping patterns, and choose new ways of relating to each other that strengthen their sense of security and intimacy.

Therapy with Doug is tailored and unique to each individual and couple. He brings both evidence-based practices, including EMDR and ACT, and his humanity, including creativity and humor, into sessions. He also enjoys incorporating spirituality and poetry, for those that are interested.
