Nathan Messiter

M.A., Licensed Professional Counselor

“To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end of life." -Robert Louis Stevenson

Nathan is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Franciscan University of Steubenville and a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Religion from Hillsdale College. Before beginning his counseling career he worked as a high school teacher, where he enjoyed getting to know his students and developed a desire to walk with others in the midst of painful and confusing experiences.

Nathan’s therapeutic approach is guided by his belief that life is a journey of becoming who we truly are, which is the best version of ourselves. While each person’s flourishing is unique, such a life is characterized by a sense of freedom and peace, even in the midst of difficulties, that we all long for. However, we all encounter challenges on this journey, such as difficult relationships, traumatic experiences, rejection, loss, fear, and failure; and sometimes we struggle to make sense of our pain and feel incapable or uncertain how to move forward and live the best life we can. At times like these, it can be especially helpful to have another person who can listen deeply to you and walk with you. Nathan is dedicated to being a source of compassion and hope to those he encounters. He believes that it is possible for every person to live a truly fulfilling life and that we all have the capacity to display unimaginable courage, wisdom, and love. His goal is to do what he can to help make these possibilities a reality by entering into your story, encouraging the strengths within you, compassionately helping you face your pain, and creatively collaborating with you to discover new ways to engage your life.

Nathan offers counseling to individuals age 18+ and couples. He has experience working with individuals wrestling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, pornography addiction, and relationship issues. He is influenced by third wave cognitive behavioral therapies, especially Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, as he finds acceptance and mindfulness to be valuable habits for living a meaningful life. In his work with couples, he often works from an Emotionally Focused Therapy framework to help couples break cycles of negative interactions, facilitate deeper understanding, strengthen their attachment bond, and connect more joyfully with one another.
